How to Use a Dry Herb Vaporizer — Complete Beginner's Guide

Using a dry herb vaporizer for the first time can feel overwhelming. Which temperature? How fine should the grind be? How hard do you inhale? Why is there barely any vapour?

This guide answers all of it. Whether you've just bought your first vaporizer or you're still deciding, here's everything you need to know to get the best results from day one.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your vaporizer — fully charged
  • A herb grinder — manual or electric; a consistent medium grind is essential
  • Dry herb — properly dried; too moist and it won't vaporize efficiently
  • A cleaning brush — usually included with the device

Step 1 — Grind Your Herb

Grind consistency is the single most important factor most beginners overlook. A good grind maximises surface area, which means more even heat distribution and better vapour production.

  • Target consistency: Medium grind — similar to coarse ground coffee. Not powder-fine, not chunky.
  • Too fine: Herb can pass through screens and into the airpath. Draws become harsh.
  • Too coarse: Uneven extraction. Some herb vaporizes, some doesn't.
  • Moisture: Herb that's too moist won't vaporize efficiently. If your herb feels sticky or damp, let it dry for 30–60 minutes before loading.

Step 2 — Load the Oven

Loading technique varies slightly by device type, but the principles are the same:

  • Fill loosely. Don't pack tightly. Airflow needs to pass through the herb for convection devices. Even conduction devices benefit from a loose pack.
  • Fill level: Most devices perform best at 70–80% capacity. A completely full oven can restrict airflow.
  • Half-pack lids (PAX): If your device includes a half-pack lid, use it for smaller loads. It keeps herb in contact with the heating surface.
  • Glass stems (Arizer): Pack herb loosely into the end of the glass stem. The stem is both the oven and the mouthpiece.

Step 3 — Set Your Temperature

Start low. This is the most common beginner mistake — jumping straight to the highest temperature and burning through the herb in two draws.

  • First session: Start at 170–180°C (338–356°F). Vapour will be light but flavour will be excellent.
  • Increase gradually: Add 5°C per session until you find the density you prefer. Most users settle between 185–200°C.
  • Finish high: Use the last 1–2 draws at 200–210°C to extract remaining compounds.

Step 4 — Heat Up and Inhale

Heat-up times vary by device — from 22 seconds (PAX 3.5) to 5–7 minutes (Volcano Classic). Wait for the device to signal it's ready before inhaling.

Inhale technique:

  • Draw slowly. Vaporizer draws should be slow and steady — 3–5 seconds. Fast, hard draws cool the oven and reduce vapour production.
  • Don't hold it in. Unlike combustion, holding vapour in longer does not increase effect. Exhale normally after 1–2 seconds.
  • Expect light vapour at first. Especially at lower temperatures, vapour can be nearly invisible. This is normal — it doesn't mean the device isn't working.

Step 5 — Know When the Session Is Done

A session is done when:

  • Vapour production drops noticeably even at higher temperatures
  • The flavour becomes toasty or slightly harsh
  • The herb in the oven has turned from green to light brown (spent material)

Spent material (ABV — Already Been Vaped) is fully extracted herb. It should be light brown, not black. Black material means you've gone too hot.

Step 6 — Clean After Every Session

A 60-second clean after every session extends your device's life significantly:

  1. While the oven is still warm (not hot), tap it upside-down to remove spent material
  2. Use the included brush to sweep out residue
  3. Wipe the mouthpiece with a clean cloth

Device-Specific Tips

Storz & Bickel Mighty+ / Crafty+

  • Use the Liquid Pad for smaller loads to keep herb in contact with the heating surface
  • The Cooling Unit is removable for cleaning — do this weekly
  • Start at 185°C and adjust from there

PAX 3.5

  • Pack the oven firmly but not tightly — PAX conduction heating requires good contact
  • Use the half-pack lid (Complete kit) for smaller loads
  • Start at Mode 2 (374°F / 190°C) for your first session

Arizer Solo II

  • Pack herb loosely into the glass stem — don't compress it
  • The stem cap prevents spillage when carrying a loaded stem
  • Start at 185°C and increase by 5°C per session

DynaVap M

  • Rotate the device slowly while applying the torch — even heating is key
  • Stop heating immediately when you hear the click
  • Start with the torch tip 1–2cm from the cap for lower temperature draws

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Grinding too fine — causes harsh draws and screen clogging
  • Packing too tight — restricts airflow, reduces vapour production
  • Starting too hot — burns through flavour in the first draw
  • Inhaling too hard — cools the oven and reduces vapour density
  • Not cleaning regularly — the single biggest cause of poor performance over time
